The KUD outlines exactly what the student needs to know, be able to understand and be able to do by the end of each unit. The "Do's" of each unit help develop the learning targets. These are the transferable skills that we want each student to be able to demonstrate proficiently at the end of each unit or course.
As a basketball player, I would always play a little harder when I knew something was at stake. I played my best in playoff games, and stretch runs of seasons because I could visualize the end and knew I wanted to be called a champion at the end of the season. Learning for students is no different. Their focus and effort levels will be much higher when they can see the culmination beforehand and know what they are striving for. No better feeling for a student then to say "Hey, I get this!" and be considered a champion at the end of each course.
